The show ip bgp neighbours command displays information about the TCP and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) connections. The ‘Established’ statement means that the connection or relationship between peers is working properly.
How to verify eBGP Configuration
To Verify eBGP Configuration, use the show ip bgp neighbours command. use the topology above as an example:
R1#show ip bgp neighbours
BGP neighbour is 172.17.100.2, remote AS 556, external link
BGP version 4, remote router ID 192.168.100.2
BGP state=Established, up 00:05:25
Last read 00:05:25, last write 00:05:25, hold time is 180, keepalive interval is 60 seconds

The show ip bgp neighbours command to display information about the TCP and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) connections and verify if the BGP peer is established. The output of the show ip bgp neighbours command above shows the BGP state as ‘Established’, which indicates that the BGP peer relationship has been established successfully.
Note: there are similarities in the output, but the phrase ‘internal or external link’ shows if the BGP configuration is internal or external.
